These days you really know there is never going to be any good news coming from the Government. However last week’s Comprehensive Spending Review announcement was not quite as bad as we had feared. As I said at the time these will be ‘painful’ savings to find, there will be changes to policing services and there will be difficult decisions to make over the next two years.
One of the first of these decisions is how much are you prepared to pay towards policing? A part of every residents council tax goes towards the police - £168 per year (for the average band D household) and I am asking you whether you would like me to freeze that or increase it from between 6p-32p a week.
This is a difficult decision because I know many households are feeling the pressure of increased costs whether that is your weekly shopping or utility bills. Everything is going up apart from wages. This is why it is really important for me to hear from as many people as possible.
This debate has to be meaningful and I am out on the road speaking to people about this. Over the summer me and my team will be meeting residents at events like the Harbour Festival, Minehead Festiavl and Frome Cheese Show. Please take the time to stop and chat and let’s hope we can bring the sunshine out as well.
You can always have your say online and please feel free to contact me.
I am so pleased we have introduced the Neighbourhood Policing Awards recognising the very officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) that work in your communities to tackle the things that matter to you.
It is the only awards scheme within Avon and Somerset Constabulary where the nominations come from the public and it means so much to officers and staff to be recognised by the communities they serve.
There are only 2 weeks to nominate so if you have received an exceptional local policing service please take the time to nominate someone online. I should also say that this event would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of local and national businesses and thank you to those who are supporting us already. Also if you want to support this event please get in touch.
