AVON AND SOMERSET POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER
Opportunity: Joint Audit Committee Member
Appointment for one year: March 2019 – March 2020
Due to an unexpected vacancy, we have an opportunity to appoint a new member to our Joint Audit Committee (“JAC”). If you are a strategic and analytical thinker with experience of governance of business operations, and could offer 4-6 days a year, we could be looking for you to join our Joint Audit Committee.
The JAC is an important, independent means of enhancing public trust and confidence in the governance of the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner (“OPCC”) and Avon & Somerset Police. It also assists the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) in discharging statutory responsibilities in holding the Police Force to account. The audit reports typically focus on core business areas of HR, IT, Finance, Major Projects, Legal Services and their controls, risk and performance management.
If you would enjoy or benefit from gaining insight into governance of your local Police Force and Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and overseeing its effectiveness, you could be looking for this opportunity.
We need someone who will:
- understand the strategic and risk key issues facing the Constabulary and OPCC
- interpret complex written material
- share best practice from other organisations.
- support and advise the Chief Constable and PCC on risk management
As a member of our JAC, you would effectively scrutinise internal and external audit reports and challenge objectively, constructively and impartially. You would advise on risk assurance, including the evaluation and treatment of the strategic risks of both organisations and be involved in commissioning the internal audit plan.
This role offers an opportunity to be involved in public service and improve outcomes for the local communities within the Avon and Somerset police force area. It also offers the opportunity to both gain and offer fresh perspectives on how organisations are governed.
The Chair and JAC members should be and seen to be appropriate and independent of the Police & Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable. As such, there are eligibility criteria that need to be applied (see footnote). The PCC is keen that the JAC represents and reflects the communities within the Avon and Somerset Policing area. We are also keen to receive expressions of interest from people with current business experience. Please think about whether you could offer your time to serve your community in this way. Expenses and a day rate allowance are paid.
To find out more about the role, or express your interest, please contact Vicky Ellis (PA to John Smith, CEO and Mark Simmonds CFO of OPCC) via: Vicky.firstname.lastname@example.org
