Understand the daily workings of our police force

The Citizens Academy is a fantastic engagement tool that we, Avon and Somerset Police, use to educate the communities that we serve. With these academies, we hope to teach the local people in Avon and Somerset about what we do, why we do it and to provide them with an opportunity to see first-hand the daily workings of our police force.

The academies are held in local community hubs over a number of weeks and are open to anyone over the age of 17.  Local people are asked to commit to attending a two hour session each week and, at the final session, are presented with a certificate of completion.

Each week focuses on a different aspect of policing from front line policing to the work of some of the more specialist departments such as training and forensics. The academies also cover topics of public interest such as antisocial behavior and hate crime. We aim to highlight every part of the force, even those areas that are often overlooked or forgotten about by local people.

We hope to reach a wide audience with these academies, specifically those who may have a negative perception of the police. Through the course we seek to challenge common misconceptions and create more positive perceptions as well as generating policing advocates within our communities.

I am so pleased that we are able to offer such a brilliant opportunity for local people to truly understand what the Police do, why we do it and the challenges we face. The Citizens Academy is an excellent way to engage our communities all over Avon and Somerset force area and provides a platform for local people to understand the work we carry out on a daily basis on the front line and behind closed doors. The Citizens Academy has proven to change negative perceptions of the police and develop meaningful and productive partnerships within communities and individuals to make our communities safer.

Previously, we have run courses in Portishead, Trinity Road, Hartcliffe and most recently Bridgwater. The Neighborhood Policing teams will be working to cover other areas across Avon and Somerset in the future, the next Citizens Academy will be launched in North Somerset in the coming months.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary will also be launching one off Masterclass sessions on areas such as crime prevention and community problem solving, these are currently being organised.
