Questioning Chief Constable Sarah Crew on neighbourhood policing: Police Question Time

Last week, I hosted Police Question Time (PQT), putting questions to Chief Constable Sarah Crew. PQT is a session designed to scrutinise policing delivery and performance across the region.

During July’s session, the focus was on neighbourhood policing. The public submitted questions in advance, including one from Empire Fighting Chance, a Bristol-based charity that supports young people through boxing.

I asked what the government’s commitment to the neighbourhood policing guarantee means for Avon and Somerset. In response, Chief Constable Sarah Crew explained that every community should have a named, visible officer who is well-known locally, focuses on community priorities, and is accountable to residents.

Sarah also highlighted that this year Avon and Somerset Police have received an investment of £4.6 million pounds, which equates to 70 new officers, which they have started recruiting for.

Sarah also shared they wanted to see an effect early, so they have redeployed existing, experienced officers into our neighbourhoods.

Nigel in North Curry asked about the visibility in villages, Sarah Crew stated that every part of Avon and Somerset has a neighbourhood policing team. Residents can find out who their local officers are on the Avon and Somerset Police website.

Empire Fighting Chance asked how do your officers and staff effectively engage with different communities, in particular young people and youth organisations. Sarah Crew said it is not just about showing up when there is a problem, it’s about having a relationship before there is a problem. Sarah also stated that PCSO’s play a unique role, as they are visible, approachable, and they focus on establishing ongoing connections with young people early on.

You can watch the rest of PQT via the PCC’s YouTube channel.

The next Police Question Time will take place on 22nd September from 2:30pm to 3pm.
