Building safer communities: Reflections from my Somerset West Public Forum

A community conversation in Taunton

Last night, I had the privilege of hosting a public forum in Taunton, welcoming residents from across Somerset West. Held at the Taunton Rugby Football Club, the event brought together 42 people from a wide range of backgrounds – local businesses, councils, elected officials, the voluntary sector, and families.

I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to attend and share their experiences and thoughts. Your voices are essential in shaping how we build safer, and secure communities.

I was joined by Chief Inspector Rebecca Wells-Cole and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Supervisor Sharon Baker from the local neighbourhood policing team. They provided valuable updates and answered questions about ongoing operations in Taunton, Bridgwater, Minehead, Wellington, and surrounding areas.

These forums are part of my ongoing commitment to open, and honest dialogue. I believe in continuous conversations – listening to your experiences and feeding back on the actions we’re taking to improve policing and prevent crime.

What we talked about

The discussion covered a wide range of issues, including:

  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Road safety
  • Business and rural crime
  • Street drinking and drug misuse
  • Illegal scooter use
  • Youth outreach
  • Visibility of police patrols
  • Male violence against women and girls

Hearing different people’s insights and lived experiences are vital. They help us understand what’s working – and where we need to do more.

Delivering on priorities

I also shared updates on the five priorities in my Police and Crime Plan. One key focus is strengthening neighbourhood policing. Through the government’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, Avon and Somerset Police will be deploying 70 additional experienced officers into local teams. These officers bring strong community ties, and the skills needed to solve problems and investigate effectively.

I’ve also launched Your Streets, My Priority – an initiative that brings police and partners together to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in our town centres and high streets.

Supporting victims

Another important update was the launch of our newly commissioned support services for victims of crime and anti-social behaviour. Since April, victims across Avon and Somerset have had access to enhanced, tailored support through:

  • Safe Link Plus
  • Young Victims Service
  • Avon and Somerset Victim Services
  • Unseen

These services offer everything from emotional support and advocacy to practical advice and restorative justice – ensuring victims are at the heart of our response.

Staying connected

When I was elected a year ago, I promised to be visible and active in our communities. Your voices matter deeply in shaping how we police and protect our areas.

Thank you again to everyone who attended. Your feedback will directly inform future decisions. I encourage you to stay connected – keep an eye on my website and social media for upcoming forum dates.

Together, we can make our communities safer, secure, and more resilient.
