Police HQ opens its doors to celebrate children and young people

Ticket-image

The incredible work of young people across Avon and Somerset will be showcased during our action-packed force open day on Sunday 13 September 2015 at Portishead HQ.

Set to be the largest ever public police event in the force area, it will feature budding fashion designers, disabled sports stars, volunteer cadets and future artists – with lots of opportunities for visitors to get involved:

·         Join young designers from Creative Youth Network in upcycling old police uniforms into stylish new attire for a fashion show – or volunteer as a model to parade the looks!

·         Learn about the wonderful world of Bollywood glamour through dance and fitness with Mumtaz Dance Company

·         Play Boccia with young stars from Access Sport who will be teaching the all-ability Olympic sport, with games throughout the day

·         Create new art and sculptures from rubbish with LitterARTI

·         Plus drive in a Police car, fingerprint Dad with CSI and meet the Police Dogs and Horses

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I’m delighted that the Constabulary will once again be opening its doors to say thank you to you for your support, as officers, staff, families, friends and residents. We had a fantastic time at last year’s open day and I hope that you will take the time to join us again for this year’s event celebrating children and young people.

“It’s a privilege to be showcasing the talent and skills of our fantastic young people across Avon and Somerset. From the young designers of the Creative Youth Network to the Bollywood glamour of the Mumtaz Dance Company; there’s something for everyone and I know you and your families will have a great time. My team will also be around on the day, so make sure you visit them and say hi.”

Sarah Crew, Assistant Chief Constable says: ‘The open day is a celebration of all that is positive, creative, innovative and talented in the young people of Avon and Somerset. We are proud of the talent – the young sportsmen and women, the artists, the performers, the musicians, the volunteers – from every corner of the force.’

The event will also be a chance for young people to give their views on policing and the crimes they most want the police to tackle. Recent ‘Tell Us’ research1 with 13-18-year-olds shows that young people feel the priority is to address child abuse (72%), bullying (52%) and sexting, stalking or bullying online (50%) and so the open day will explore how they want to work with the police to address these issues.

Sarah Crew continues: ‘Alongside the fun activities, we are committed to understanding, being empathetic and professionalising our response to young people. We want to hear their views on policing and work in ways that appeal to them, to help keep the next generation of Avon and Somerset safe. In the survey, young people told us they want joint activities with police officers and to talk to us via social media, so these opportunities will be explored’.

The open day is also a platform to shout about the inspirational young people who work with the force - on work experience, apprentices, cadets and PCSOs - and find out about their experiences. Come and find out more about people like:

·         Amy Hosell, 21, a Law with Criminology student on work placement with the digital team

·         Adelle Fiederle, 21 Business Administration Apprentice, Local Policing, Taunton

·         Oliver Drury, 23, Business Administration Apprentice in Specialist Ops Team and a PCSO. Applying to be a Police officer after working with Avon and Somerset police

·         Callum Finch, 15, a work experience student

The open day will be held at Avon and Somerset Police Headquarters, Valley Road, Portishead, Bristol BS20 8QJ. It runs from 10am – 5pm. More details are available at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/openday including how to get to the event, car park details and a full schedule of events.
