Police and Crime Panel

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Panel supports and scrutinises the actions, decisions and performance of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

The Police and Crime Panel is made up of 14 councillors from all local authorities in the area plus three independent co-opted members.

The Police and Crime Panel can:

  • Review the PCC’s plan for the proposed precept (the policing part of the council tax budget) and they have the power to veto the decision if necessary.
  • Review the draft Police and Crime Plan and Annual Report and make suggestions about the publications.
  • Review the PCC suggestions around the recruitment of the Chief Constable and they have the power to veto the decision if necessary.
  • Review the PCCs suggestions for roles of the OPCC Chief Executive, Chief Finance Officer and any deputy PCC that they seek to appoint.
  • Request reports and call the PCC to attend its meetings.
  • Consider complaints against the PCC of a non-criminal nature.

Police and Crime Panel meetings are open to the public, except where confidential or exempt information is likely to be discussed.

The public can ask questions at each meeting relevant to the Panel’s functions.
