“Your voice matters: building safer communities together”

PCC Clare Moody reflects on her North Somerset public forum tackling crime, safety, and community priorities.

On Tuesday, 25 November, I hosted a public forum for local businesses, councillors, voluntary groups and residents at the Weston-super-Mare Museum

Around 40 people joined to share their views, raise concerns, and hear about the work being done to keep North Somerset safe.

These conversations matter. They help shape priorities and ensure policing reflects what communities need most.

What we talked about

I was joined by Chief Inspector Andy Barry, Inspectors Lee Kerslake and Matthew Hawkins, who gave updates on local policing.

One success story was the recent Safer Business Action operation, which led to six arrests for offences including shoplifting and assault—one offender receiving a custodial sentence.

We also discussed the focus on Safer Town Centres, especially in Weston-super-Mare, with high-visibility patrols and targeted operations planned for the festive season to tackle business crime, anti-social behaviour, and night-time economy issues.

Key issues raised

Residents raised important issues and insights into a wide range of topics including:

  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Retail crime
  • Rising hate crime, including racism and Islamophobia
  • Youth engagement
  • Male violence against women and girls
  • Visibility of neighbourhood policing

Your feedback is vital—it helps us understand what’s working and where we need to improve.

Delivering on my priorities and what’s changing

I shared progress on my Police and Crime Plan, particularly strengthening neighbourhood policing. Despite recent Government announcements, there’s no immediate change to the role of Police and Crime Commissioners—the current system stays until 2028. All the vital work we’re doing—commissioning support services, scrutinising police performance, and building safer communities—continues as normal.

Avon and Somerset Police have introduced a new geographical model, dividing the force into three areas—Bristol, North East, and Somerset—each led by a Chief Superintendent. This I’m confident will improve collaboration and communication across communities.

Supporting Victims

I also gave an update about the new services for victims of crime and anti-social behaviour. These include:

  • Safe Link Plus
  • Young Victims Service
  • Avon and Somerset Victim Services
  • Unseen

These services provide emotional support, advocacy, and practical advice—putting victims at the heart of our response.

Looking Ahead

When I was elected, I promised to be visible and active in our communities. Forums like this are one way I keep that promise. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed—you’re helping shape the future of policing in North Somerset.

Stay connected through my website and social media for updates and upcoming forum dates. Together, we can make our communities safer.
