PCC Clare Moody’s Statement on the VAWG Strategy
“With one in 8 women victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking, the launch of the government’s violence against women and girls (VAWG) strategy, is crucial to tackle a national emergency. This emergency is not inevitable.
The strategy has prevention and intervention at its heart, tackling the root causes of abuse. I welcome the multi-year campaign approach of the strategy, aimed at public information and education, weaving in schools to highlight high risk individuals, targeting the most harmful and misogynist behaviours and the growth of violence in young men and boys. Investing in teachers to develop healthy relationships and empowering them to respond to the realities children face today is the right step forward.
“It is just as welcome that police and social services will be given the right tools to impact change and to deal properly with perpetrators, through effective policing, through programmes addressing perpetrators and other interventions.
“I am also delighted to see effective and real funding to support victims and survivors of violence and abuse.
“The government has taken real steps to tackle what is now one of the UK’s growing national emergencies and I look forward to working with the Home Office to roll the strategy out.”
