Special Constables carrying out a road safety operation
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens is looking for people to volunteer to help keep our communities safe.
Avon and Somerset Special Constabulary is open for applications from today (Tuesday August 20) until 1pm on Thursday August 29 2013.
As volunteer police officers, our Special Constables have the same police powers, uniform and equipment as regular officers.
They work alongside police officers and are involved in many different areas of policing.
Special Constables can patrol neighbourhoods with PCSOs, police football matches and big events or work in specialist roles such as CID or road policing.
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I admire and value the dedication and commitment of the Special Constables we currently have here in Avon and Somerset and I would strongly like to encourage people from all walks of life to apply to join the team.
“Special Constables play a vital role in reducing the fear of crime by offering reassurance to residents, acting as a vital link between local communities and neighbourhood policing teams.
“Specials are both an important and valued aspect of policing, bringing a different type of dynamic and enthusiasm to the police, if you think you are up for it then I would urge you to apply. Good luck.”
Chief Superintendent Nikki Watson, the force’s lead for Special Constables and volunteers, said: “Our Special Constables are a positive force, helping to improve the service we provide by bringing with them an extensive pool of skills, experience and an unparalleled knowledge of their community. Whether you’ve just retired, are a full-time mum planning to return to work or are a student looking for experience, being a Special Constable could be the perfect fit to suit your lifestyle.
“Employers tell us they value the skills Special Constables develop – including team work, confidence and leadership and communication skills.”
To join the Special Constabulary you must be:
- Aged 18 or or older
- Fit and healthy
- Able to give at least 16 hours a month
- Able to commit to training
Special Constables are given training, uniform and equipment and, although unpaid, may claim reasonable expenses. To find out more and to download an application form, visit our website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/recruitment/specials
