We are fully supportive of the role of the police to facilitate peaceful protest. But there has to be proportionality.
Protesters closing the M32 has crossed the line and adversely impacted on many residents who need to get to work, pick up kids or get to hospital appointments.
We are spending tax payers money. This operation will cost upwards of £300,000.
The police have worked really hard this summer. We have had some tremendous events including Glastonbury Festival, St Paul’s Carnival, Pride Festival and this weekend is Bristol Harbourside Festival. All of these events need policing and there is no such thing as extra police. It means the police have to cancel rest days for officers, working overtime and increasing shift lengths at a time where we still have hundreds of 999 and 101 calls to respond to.
