Local people attended the latest public forum in Minehead on Tuesday 24 September, which was jointly hosted by Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens and Chief Constable Andy Marsh.
The new leader of Somerset West and Taunton, Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, opened the public forum at The Beach Hotel. After speeches from the PCC and the Chief Constable, Chief Inspector Lisa Simpson gave a presentation to attendees on neighbourhood policing in the local area.
Local people were then given the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns on policing issues during the public question and answer session. There was a particular focus on CCTV in the area, rural crime, police stations and early intervention.
Speaking after the forum, PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “An important part of my role as the PCC is listening to local people and public forums provide the perfect opportunity to hear first-hand how local people feel about the police.
“The issues raised tonight by residents have been well and truly heard by myself, the Chief Constable and the local policing teams. It is clear that the residents who attended the public forum want to make a difference in their communities so, I want to thank them for attending and taking the time to listen to me, the Chief Constable and the Chief Inspector.”
Chief Constable Andy Marsh added: “The public forums are a brilliant opportunity for us to meet local people face-to-face and discuss the challenges we are facing in policing and how communities can help us. It is important that we hear from local people about how we can improve the police service to meet their needs and ensure everyone feels safe.”
